Hello,
It has been an enjoyable summer. We hope yours has been exciting and full of design bliss.
We are happy to report that new opportunities have surfaced for the Upstate Design Community due to the engagement of people like you. Many creative individuals have stepped forward and have asked: What can I do to help [build a stronger Upstate design community]? It is very exciting to know that there are many in our community who want to see stronger connections in our local creative communities, which will inevitably create profound connections throughout the Upstate NY Chapter and across the planet.
Our answer is to encourage them to do "bottom-up" participation. What this means is encourage those interested in a stronger local network to organize projects/happenings in their location and connect with others they know to make great things happen. By taking ownership of these projects/happenings, each group is raising the bar from the average in their location. This creates an opportunity not previously available. Providing what many want to be a part of...this is something bigger. It is an active design community doing great things and receiving the recognition earned.
Look forward to various projects, events and gatherings throughout the upstate created by local designers. If something is not happening in your area, we encourage you not to wait for others, but to step forward and create your own design adventure. Then tell us about it. We are here to champion your efforts.
Keep in touch and tell your friends about AIGA Upstate New York. We are "THE professional association of design".

NEW WEB SITE
September 1st was the launch of our new chapter web site - http://upstatenewyork.aiga.org. It was created by a volunteer team under the direction of our new Web Chairperson - Debi Bower, Web Designer for Wegman's Food Markets, Inc. in Rochester. She orchestrated the design and functionality to better serve our Upstate design community. Along with the web site, we have added members from across the state to create the email team, lead by Jeff Welsh of FolioType in Oswego.
Communication is one of the benefits you receive for your membership. Having an online resource which represents our region and includes content from the national level is helpful to keeping you informed in the current design discourse. We are proud of the new web site and plan to continue growing it as a resource for you.
To list a few new additions:
JOBS - There is a jobs section that includes a listing of available jobs not just in the Upstate of New York, but all over the country. This section allows members and non-members to post jobs. A great resource targeted to our industry.
DIALOGUE - This is our news and articles section. Each post is open to conversation using a blog format. Join the conversation or send us your articles about the design industry, exhibition or book reviews or your accomplishments.
RESOURCES - There is a huge selection of relevant videos and podcasts on design, as well as links to design resources.
MEMBERSHIP - We are always being asked what are the benefits of AIGA membership. Besides being part of a community of 22,000 creatives nationally, there are the Adobe and Apple discounts and health insurance information to name a few. Not a member? Join us here today.
WEB BANNERS FOR MEMBERS

With the launch of our new web site, AIGA UPSTNY has created a new member benefit. The web team has created a rotating banner of members work on every page. This is a great opportunity to participate in our chapter in a new way.

CREATIVE EATS | September 2009

This monthly social event series was a huge success last year. AIGA UPSTNY is continuing these third [3rd] Thursday of the month social gatherings. The locations will change between a dining experience and a happy hour gathering. We hope you will come out to join us in open dialogue about local design issues and creative discourse.
This networking event is open to long time professionals through beginning students. It is not exclusive to members or graphic designers. It is a gathering of those in the local creative industry, no mater what your title.

EVENTS CALENDAR
Our new web site has an event calendar that allows us to list happenings throughout our chapter and national level events. Any event that we list on our calendar automatically appears on our calendar and the national events calendar at AIGA.ORG. This is a great incentive for the Upstate Design community to submit local design industry/education happenings. Not only does this keep local people notified of local happenings, but it also lets other chapters throughout the country know what is happening. Giving proper recognition to the great activities happening around the Upstate design community.
Who can submit?
Anyone in Upstate New York who has a design related happening to promote. This includes all of our members and non-members alike (We hope you plan on joining the other 22,000 of us). The event has to be design industry oriented, (professional lecture, technical demonstration) or design education oriented, (Inspirational lecture, design exhibition, student presentation).
We ask in return of promoting your event to the AIGA community, to be given credit as a "Media Sponsor" for your event on your promotional materials.
Please contact Dennis Angelo, Communication Chair, with your information to be considered for publication. communication@upstatenewyork.aiga.org
