Hello [member_name_first],
Thank you for opening up this email. One of our goals for the chapter has been to create and disseminate content to the Upstate design community using electronic formats. Our chapter website has been getting great traffic and started as our core tool for communication. We have expanded our outreach using email newsletters which have been well received and have gained the attention of non-members in our region. This is one of the ways the board and volunteer members assist with providing value to our AIGA members and support our design community through their leadership. One way that you can help share content is by forwarding this email to all your friends. Please take a moment to pass this content to your colleagues and design friends. We appreciate your effort.
To add in the ways we have been connecting with our community, Facebook and Twitter have offered us new avenues to connect Upstate designers. These resources have allowed us provide instant news, network individuals, have public discourse, and answer questions from regional designers. As a result, their use has increased the visibility of the AIGA UPSTNY Chapter efforts across the country and the world! It is great to receive feedback from the design community inside and outside of our region. Upstate New York designers are claiming their place on the world design map. We are very proud of being involved in making this happen.
Please be sure to forward emails, friend the chapter on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. We want to connect to you.

DEBBIE MILLMAN LECTURE
What makes a brand stand out? Is there some magic that turns a simple script logo for a soda into the international graphic icon that is Coca-Cola, or makes us salivate over the latest product from Apple? Presented by Debbie Millman, partner at Sterling Brands and President of the AIGA, this presentation takes a deep dive into the influence branding has on our everyday lives, from branding ourselves and the world around us to the role branding plays in the products we buy and the way we live.
Register today. Space is limited. Learn More
In the meantime, enjoy listening to Design Matters with Debbie Millman. The show combines a stimulating point of view about graphic design, branding and cultural anthropology. In a business world dependent on change, design is one of the few differentiators left.

SPEAKING OF TYPE...
By Marjorie Crum
Who is the man known today as the "ather of corporate identity" and is know both as an architect and designer?
This man begins his professional career by mixing with the artistic radicals of his day as well as being a member of the Munich Secession. Peter Behrens is the man who works as a painter, illustrator, and book-binder in an artisanal way during the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) movement in Germany. He frequents bohemian circles and is interested in subjects related to the reform of life-styles. In 1899 Behrens accepts an invitation of the Grand-duke Ernst-Ludwig of Hesse to join the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. In Darmstadt, Behrens builds his own house in which he designs every component, from structure down to cutlery. The building of this house is considered to be the turning point in his life, when he leaves the artistic circles of Munich and moves away from the Jugendstil movement towards a sober and austere style of design. He is one of the leaders of architectural reform at the turn of the century and is a major designer of factories and office buildings in brick, steel and glass. . . .

UPSTNY MEMBER INTERVIEW
I am a senior graphic design major at SUNY Oswego and AIGA student member since 2008. I am currently the president of Break Thru Design, my schools AIGA student group. I am really excited about becoming a professional designer after graduation, and look forward to continued learning through my real world experiences.
How do you benefit from being a student member of AIGA?
As a student, AIGA gives me an outlet to expand my involvement in the design community outside of the classroom. Attending AIGA events and participating in Creative Eats enables me to connect with other professionals working in the field. I feel that getting involved and participating in the design community is a great way to demonstrate my commitment to the profession.
What inspires you?
I get a lot of my inspiration from studying good and bad designs and learning about what makes it work or not. Resources like design books and websites are valuable sources, but the most inspiring thing to me is having a problem, and the pursuit of solving it. All of the research and discovery leading up to a successful solution is rewarding and makes me hungry for a new problem to solve.
What role do you think designers should play in going green?
I think everybody needs to put into practice ways of being more environmentally responsible. The unique role designers have is to work with the innovators developing and implementing green technologies or methods and help them to communicate to society the realistic advantages they offer for our future.
As a student member, what kinds of Upstate NY AIGA Chapter programming would you most benefit from or like to participate in?
I have really enjoyed and benefitted a lot from what AIGA Upstate NY has been doing. Things like Creative Eats, portfolio reviews, lectures, and Q&A's are all great events. I would love to see more of the same programs as well as expanding on programs that reach out more to students.
In what way does being a part of AIGA enhance your future career as a designer?
I see AIGA as an organization that I can directly get involved with to supplement my future career by connecting with others that share a passion for design. I think being active in AIGA by attending and contributing to programs will show that I am dedicated to my chosen profession and that I have a desire to stay connected, informed and current on all the relevant issues I may encounter as a designer. I hope to be a leader in the design community as my career progresses and I feel that AIGA is the best place to get started.
